Nettby.no, Web City, is the second largest Internet-based community in Norway (after Facebook) with more than 980,000 users and profiles (as of January 3, 2009). It was founded on September 14, 2006, and is fully owned by VG Multimedia AS, a Norwegian news company, and Nettby Community Holding AS. Users use nicknames instead of real names. Users' profiles are visible to all other users. "Communities" on Nettby are linked to the city (or other geographical unit, such as town or village) that the user claims as his or her current residence. Trondheim is the largest community, with over 36 000 "inhabitants".

Nettby has been a resounding success, but recent developments allow the Board of Community Nettby AS has decided to liquidate the company. The service had the highest over 350,000 daily users and over 800,000 registered profiles. Over 70% of Norwegian teenagers have created a profile on the service and at times had Nettby over 300 million weekly page views - more than the ten largest Norwegian sites combined.
The last eighteen months have Nettby however, had a continuous decline in traffic. To reverse the trend have been implemented a wide range of measures, including a complete redesign. This is not a uniquely Norwegian phenomenon, but also in eg Denmark, Sweden and France, the national social networking sites have experienced significant decline. The winner is Facebook.
In order that the service should not be a ghost town with ever lower activity and significant deficit, the Board and the owners decided that the service will be closed with effect from 1 January 2011. In practical terms this means that after this date it is not possible to log in now is longer.
